Public flood relief meeting turns hostile as Moorland and Fordgate residents express anger

This is The West Country: Over 300 people gather at the public meeting in Huntworth Over 300 people gather at the public meeting in Huntworth

ANGRY residents from flooded villages packed into the public flood meeting in Huntworth to voice their frustration.

Around 300 people attended the multi-agency meeting at the Canalside Conference Centre in Huntworth on Wednesday, February 13, where the Environment Agency and other organisations were accused of letting the villagers down.

One person from Moorland during the meeting said: “We do feel we have been sacrificed. We all feel we have been left down. This should have been done weeks ago. This started around Christmas.”

The meeting was chaired by members of the Environment Agency, Somerset County Council, Sedgemoor District Council and Emergency services and the speakers were heckled frequently.

When the Environment Agency promised that sandbagging operations were in place, people from the crowd told them that it's too late because they were already flooded.

When Environment Secretary Owen Patterson's name was mentioned, the crowd started laughing and booing his name.

One man stood up, claiming he wanted to “defend” the Environment Agency. He said: “My mum was informed that she would be flooded 4 days after she was flooded.”

Further concerns were expressed about the security for the empty homes and difficulty using the police 101 number.

Superintendent Ian Wylie assured the residents that there are additional police resources to protect vulnerable communities and the communication problems would be addressed.

A spokesperson from the police press office said: “We have created a dedicated email address, floodinginsomerset@avonandsomerset.co.uk, where people can email any queries. This will be monitored 24 hours a day by the communication staff here at Taunton silver control.”

“We are also going to make sure the right number of officers are in the right place at the right times.”

There will be weekly drop-in surgeries with people from various agencies on hand to advise residents on how they can access help.

These will be held at the Canalside Conference Centre in Huntworth every week on Wednesdays between 6pm and 8pm.

Our Residents, in and around BurrowBridge, Athelney, Moorland, Muchelney, Langport, the A361, and any other Communes that have been Devastated by this Disaster !!! Because that is what it is to them......
One of my friends lives in Moorland, 70 years old, was relieved this time last year, when the Flood Water then was 15-20 Yards from his Bungalow, a One off Occurrence the Bloody Environment Agency Spokes Person Said ' Quote'.
So what went wrong this year, complete Incompetence from The E Agency.
It is well known, that BURROWBRIDGE would be SACRIFICED to save Bridgwater from flooding, in their Mock, but inaccurate assessments.
I as I have said B4 asked as to why the R Parrett could not be Dredged, they Trotted Out the Same Old Negatives, CONTAMINATION!!! Miraclously the Parrett has Self Cleansed. Alleluia !!!!
Now they admit that they should have Dredged the River Tone, they now say the River Parrett can be Also Dredged .........The Elvers will be Pleased, to swim upstream in Deeper water, more to mature, than being caught by the Fishermen, with Scoop nets, if you can call that Fishing.....
NB: Westminster hall debate On the E Agency, they make the statement! that
Dredging needs to be done on the rivers tone and Parrett , that the Siltation, is @ 65% in the River basins. That restoring these Rivers to 80-90% of their 1960 Capacity would Significantly Reduce flooding, for the duration and depth of water across Curry, Hay, Salt and North moors! based on the 2012 Floods.
So I Ask Again, Wht Did they Not Activate A Dredging Policy Scheme???!
Muppets !!!!!!'.
The Call for lord Chris smith to Resign, I fully Endorse, @ £100.000 Per Annum , for a Three day max a week Quango chairman! is outrageous! he along with 50% of the Agency middle management! should be sacked! for incompetence in the Work place.
The salaries saved! will be better spent on dredging! Engineers on the River banks! building New pumping stations along the Rivers to Take the excess
rain water from the levels! into the King Sedgemoor drain, and the contributory rivers, and out to sea. Down a properly dredged R. Parrett, that can hold 60 % more volume.
Then, in time, Abolish the responsibility, of River and Drainage matters! back to local drainage Boards, to Establish correct maintenance and management of our Water courses! for the future.
Then perhaps! we can all return to DRY LAND, Lower insurances and Mortgage premiums! as the RISK will be reduced., for all.in the future in Somerset.
This mis-management! has cost in Financial, not forgetting personal terms,
Many , many More £ Millions in insurance and losses, than if they the Environment Agency, had not had their heads inserted up their own Preverbal
BACKSIDES...........
.just in Dec and Jan the costs for UK Flood related insurance Claims was £440 million. Feb -March- April, will come figures as and when Victims can return to their Flooded properties, and businesses.??
Hence, As To Why Lord Chris Smith. Quango Chairman of the E Agency, must resign! NOW !!!! The Environment Agency are NOT FIT FOR PURPOSE. In their current format.
