Chard north county councillor leaves UKIP

This is The West Country: NIGEL Pearson. NIGEL Pearson.

THE Somerset County Councillor for Chard north has left the UK Independence Party.

Nigel Pearson, who was voted in to represent the division at 2013's elections, will continue in his role as an independent councillor.

He said: "Due to irreconcilable differences between myself and the chairman of the UKIP Somerset County Committee, I regret that I cannot continue as a member of UKIP.

"I would like to take this opportunity to thank all the UKIP members and supporters in the Yeovil branch who have worked so hard over the years, culminating in the excellent county council election results last May."

At last years County Council elections in Chard North the sitting Lib Dem councillor Jenny Kenton stood down. She and her husband and her sister are Chard Town Councillors and Jenny was next in line to be the Mayor of Chard, which she currently is. This is the way for the ruling Lib Dem dynasty as Chard Town Council has been under Lib Dem control for some thirty years.
Her intended successor was another local pub landlord Jason Baker, who hosts the local Cotley Hunt in Boxing Day and is waiting in the wings to join the ruling Lib Dem fold on the town council. The Lib Dem’s in Chard are Tories in all but name, fully supportive of there collection of local MPs; David Laws, David Heath and Jeremy Brown who sit very happily with there Tory colleagues in Westminster.
The leader of South Somerset Tory group Martin Wale who is currently a town and district councillor was the expected winner of this contest for Chard North as local people were concerned about having another Lib Dem pub landlord representing them. “lets hear it for the beer”; would have been the Lib Dem cry if he had won!
Now Chard has a high influx of Portuguese and Polish workers with many of the council documentation available in Portuguese and Polish. The intake of these EU workers can be traced back over the last fifteen years as local businesses recruited these workers via employment, travel and accommodation agencies.
With the current government fanning the flames of the immigration issue and bashing the European Union with its “we do not like Johnny Foreigner narrative”; this has sparked concern about the number of legal EU workers in the local area and its affect on schools, social housing and local job opportunities. An ideal breeding ground for UKIP to exploit and having stood in that election myself I can say that the election material produced by UKIP was very hard hitting on the immigration issues and drove many disaffected Lib Dem voters over to the UKIP camp and so we had the runaway success of Nigel Pearson who as UKIP polled nearly 40% of the total vote.
Having congratulated Nigel on his election success following his election I again wish him every success as an independent sitting in County Hall. He always stuck me as a bright intelligent individual and I often wondered what he saw in the UKIP party. I am sure he will continue to serve the all the people of Chard North well.

Well said Councillor Forsyth, Chard Town Council seems like a private members club as they wine, dine and dance at the Guildhall.

Personally I don't care which party Councillors stand for. as long as they work for the town, Mr Pearson seems to be doing a reasonable job. Presumably any Councillors that are using the Guildhall for the above are paying to wine dine and dance at the Guildhall?

Dear Sirs

I would like to pass comment on Cllr Graham Forsyth’s comments in the post bag this week.

Whilst I agree that Nigel Pearson will do a good job at representing Chard North I am quite annoyed that he got voted in as a UKIP representative and now has become independent, surely there should be a by election after all was he elected because he is Nigel or because he represented UKIP???

This aside I cannot believe that Cllr Graham Forsyth who I can only presume is not only expressing his own views but those of the people and council he represents. It would be interesting to hear from the town Clerk and the rest of the town councillors as to whether he is representative of all of their views or is he bringing our town council into disrepute?

I start with the comments made against "pub landlord Jason Baker" who cares if he is a pub landlord if he is prepared to give his time for free to help organise things with in the town (which I see as reported by this paper he already does) for example the Christmas lights, the summer festival, the town team and many others why would it matter what his job is or what his political beliefs are? Surely we would want people who are prepared to work for the town and not just moan and complain. I would go one step further to ask what Cllr Graham Forsyth has done for the community of Chard since his election. Good on Mr Baker is what I say and all of the people who volunteer their time for the good of Chard.

Cllr Graham Forsyth talks about "The Dynasty of Chard" where has this come from? some kind of fantasy or just some bitter and twisted man who cannot get his own way? It’s called Democracy the people on the council are voted in by the people. I’m sure Jenny Kenton had many reasons for standing down at the last county election and I would presume this has nothing to do with her mayor ship of which I feel she is doing an excellent job!

On a final couple of points I believe the Cotley Hunt is based at The Cotley in so perhaps Cllr Graham Forsyth should have checked this out before printing incorrect facts. Perhaps Cllr Graham Forsyth would like to get involved in the community along with some of the volunteers that work tirelessly and for free with our town instead of slandering hard working people within the town. I would hope that people who have no other interest other than to moan refrain from standing in the next election and that when people go to the poles next year they think about the people they are voting for and what they actually do for the town before they elect them?

Regards

David Williams, Chard

In Reply to Cllr Graham Forsyth’s letter in the post bag.

Do I take it Cllr Forsyth is not a fan of Chard?? From what I see both of the councillors mentioned Cllr Jenny Kenton & Cllr Martin Wale both do a great job and seem to be involved in several projects and groups in Chard. As for Jason Baker he seems to also be very proactive in the community so what is the problem?? I can see why people do not put there selves out for the Town of Chard it is because they can do without the grief and Venom from Town Councillors who I can only presume are not getting their own way or would they rather see Chard wither and die? Perhaps more people would be interested in helping with community events and the promotion of the town if it was not for the criticism from Councillors (Cllr Forsyth) I would hope that Chard Town Council will be having a chat with Cllrr Forsyth and his public comments whilst being a representative of Chard. I apologise to any councillors (from whatever party they represent) who do not fall into the above category (Cllr Forsyth’s moaning party) as I am aware that the majority of our councillors do an excellent job for our town and get no pay and usually little recognition for their hard work.

I for one do not care which party people represent on the town council as long as they are working in the best interest for the people of Chard, Perhaps Cllr Forsyth would like to tell his Constituents what he has and is currently doing for us good town folk he represents?

To Sum up I see Cllr Forsyth as an obsessional-neurotic with a big chip on his shoulder!

I would firstly like to thank Councillor Forsyth for his personal biased summary of the election processes.

Not only has he insulted his community, for which he is supposed to represent; he has also insulted and made crude assumptions on his opponents.

Does Councillor Forsyth have his facts correct? No – Jason Baker, local businessman has put himself forward to represent his community because he is passionate about listening to his community and striving to solve issues in an amicable way that is right for the community. Regardless of his political alliance Jason listens to his community and is not afraid to challenge on their behalf.

The snide comment “let’s hear it for the beer” highlights the complete lack of respect and understanding that Councillor Forsyth has. Is it wrong that a local Business Man pays attention to his community and feels that he has a responsibility to communicate their concerns in a democratic way? Regardless of their trade.

I would also like to clarify that The choughs Hotel do not host the Boxing Day Hunt, however they do support this time honoured tradition, that has continued for more years than most can remember, by supplying the refreshments, at no financial gain. This event also brings trade into Chard Town which is beneficial to all.

Should politics be a family affair? Is it wrong for new people wishing to support their community come forward?

I fully support the democratic process of elections but often wonder if some Councillors hold their positions by default because they make life unbearable for any candidate to stand and yet so not in touch with their community!
