Youth Councils looking for members in Dulverton and Watchet
YOUNGSTERS in Dulverton and Watchet interested in improving the two towns for their benefit are invited to join the youth council.
Set up just before Christmas, Somerset County Council has provided funding for two separate youth councils in each district.
The youth councils in Dulverton and Watchet were each given £1,000 by the county council and £200 by their town councils.
The councils are still looking for members to join and have a say on what to spend the money on. Minehead Eye director Naomi Griffith, who oversees youth clubs in West Somerset, is running the councils until the provision ends in March, and hopes young people will run them after that.
She said: “Though the remit runs out in March it would be fantastic if the members kept it going because already each council has had some really brilliant ideas.”
Youngsters aged 11-19 can take part in the council and meetings are held fortnightly.
Naomi said: “In Dulverton the members want to have a cooking club for young people at the middle school, are sending out surveys to young people to ask for their opinions, and want to improve the cycle path between Dulverton and Brushford.
“In Watchet, participants want to set up dance and music activities, and improve the crossing in Doniford Road and the Henry David playing field.
“It’s a fascinating process to watch and it’s great to see young people being able to do something about things they care about.
“A member from the town council comes along and reports back to the council – it’s a really positive relationship and we hope it continues and stays active.
“There’s always scope for more members, so please get in contact if you are interested.”
Ché Percival, who has run the youth club in Watchet since 1999, said: “It’s great going along and hearing their ideas, and what they have to say.
“You don’t have to be a member of the club – we want to hear from all young people, so this is your chance to make a difference.”
