This is The West Country: Residents of Bridgwater signed the petition to cut the bingo tax. Residents of Bridgwater signed the petition to cut the bingo tax.

BINGO fans in Bridgwater came together to sign a petition asking the Government to reduce the gambling tax on bingo clubs.

More than 400 signatures were gathered from campaign supporters at Mecca in Bridgwater after a weekend of bingo.

Jenny Witcombe, manager at Mecca in Bridgwater, told the Mercury: “The unfair tax burden is putting financial pressures on clubs like mine, and preventing new investment, new jobs and new clubs.”

The petition was organised as part of a nationwide campaign entitled ‘Boost Bingo’, which is aimed at bringing down the bingo duty tax, which is currently set at 20%, in line with other gambling activities, which are currently taxed at 15%.

Ms Witcombe said: “It hurts small clubs like ours more than larger clubs.

“It’s something the customers here in Bridgwater embraced and had no problems signing the petition.”
