Resignation claims after Somerset County Council child protection plans review

This is The West Country: Resignation claims after Somerset County Council child protection plans review Resignation claims after Somerset County Council child protection plans review

PEOPLE should be held to account following a review of Somerset County Council’s child protection plans which found more than a third were inadequate, it has been claimed.

Government inspectors ordered a review of 453 child protection plans after the council was given the lowest rating for its child protection work by Ofsted in July last year and, of those plans audited, 170 were inadequate and 250 found to be adequate or above.

Following the report, former county councillor Justin Downes, 63, claimed both Cllr Frances Nicholson, cabinet member for children’s services, and chairman Cllr David Fothergill should resign.

Mr Downes said: “She (Cllr Nicholson) should resign or at least be relieved of her responsibility until the matter in the department which she is in charge of has been sorted out – she should certainly not be managing it.”

The plans are made for the most vulnerable children in society and those identified as being at risk of harm.

The council said all inadequate cases will be re-audited to make sure recommendations for these children have been complied with.

Council leader John Osman, speaking on behalf of Cllr Nicholson, said: “Frances has taken on a very challenging role and is bringing about a steady improvement.

“We are all working hard to turn this area around and Ofsted acknowledged we have the right people in the right place to do that.”

Cllr Fothergill added: “Should I personally feel that I have done something which doesn’t best serve the communities I represent I would have absolutely no hesitation to resign.”

In November, the Department for Communities and Local Government gave the council a target of 75% of cases being judged adequate or better.

The review found 170 (37.5%) child protection plans were inadequate, 190 cases (41.9%) were adequate, 58 (12.8%) were good, two cases (0.4%) were outstanding and 33 cases (7.2%) were ungraded.

A spokesman for Somerset County Council said: “Things have got better but we are far from complacent. We understand there is still a long way to go before we reach the standards we set for ourselves.”

Cllr Justine Baker, shadow cabinet for children and families, added: “As a parent of two young children I find this report personally shocking; no child should have care that is just ‘ adequate’, let alone inadequate.

“We are talking about ‘at risk’ children – those most vulnerable who we as a local authority are responsible for. I can only hope that things improve extremely quickly.”

Its too late for poor Jonas Staddens case to be re-audited, for being inadequate, as the poor child has died while in their care, and to make things more tragic, it seems the department only want to protect their selves, when they should have been protecting him.

Much is happening behind the scenes and the family are getting support from all over the country. Sad to say none has been forthcoming from SCC, despite their published lies.
Please join the Justice for Jonas facebook group if you'd like to do your bit & help us to take a stand. We can't bring Jonas back for his family but together we can make a difference & stop another innocent life being lost.

Several comments are about Jonas Stadden. I'd like to point out that a pathologist, a paediatrician and the independent coroner between them ruled he died from natural causes - a form of pneumonia, that nothing could have been done to save him, and that a report of a burn mark was a bruise and no more. What happened is a tragedy for family, friends, foster carers and everyone who knew him. But his death was nobody's fault.

@SomersetComms.....p
recisely my point about protecting themselves, over protecting the child. Closing ranks, we see it all the time, try googling Hollie Greig, http://holliegreig.i
nfo/ nobody can convince me that authorities don't close ranks when they are in the wrong. Especially that SSC are one of the poorest Services in the country with regards to children s services, That child died, even though his father tried raising the alarm, he was promised he would be taken to the doctors, as his father could see he was gravely ill, but the carers never took him, And for those who question why Jonas was in care in the first place, they are missing the point altogether, the point is, he was supposed to be being cared for by Social Services regardless of the circumstances, and he was let down.

I have seen a picture of that "bruise", friends and medical professionals have all said it is a burn, so can you see why this is smelling more like a cover up every day? People like this poor child's parents have no voice against the authorities unless they fight tooth and nail, most people give up against the brick wall that is a cover up,and it seems justice only is served after a fight, I just hope these parents have it in them to keep fighting until the people concerned are made accountable.

Another coroner, in fact the Chief Coroner is looking into the case now. In addition, there will be another Post Mortem performed independently as is the parents right. There will also be an inquest.

The police and GMC will also be looking into to why a burn was misdiagnosed as a bruise, and more importantly, why the bruise was not reported to the police?. A bruise does not flake off. Whether it was a burn or bruise, it would have been extremely painful, he would have screamed for hours, and nobody knows anything?

If nothing could have been done to save him, then why wasn't he in Intensive Care instead of foster "care"? Isn't Pneumonia treatable? why did he have a Hib B chest infection if he was vaccinated for Hib B?

Strange how the council (Peter) is spending so much time putting out misinformation. All being documented. Parents will respond to all lies and exaggerations later, in the RCJ. The Down's Syndrome Association of the UK have already responded to one of your lies. I have never seen people squirm so much as this case.

The last time the parents heard from the council, it was in the form of a threat through their former solicitor that they would be jailed if they didn't remove posts from the internet. Despicable! everyone on the council knew of his death before the parents were told. While a doctor was sent to comfort the foster carers, you sent 4 police officers to the parents, 4 1/2 hours later. Heartless!!

People are starting to focus on Peter Lewis now, it seems quite a few children have died under his watch. "CARE FAILURES UNDER LEWIS"
A google search of this man turns up a lot of interesting information.

There are too many stories to post. I wont bother. Most interesting, is Peter Lewis even a social worker? Is he trained and registered?

The parents don't want a witch hunt as you allege, they simply want the truth. If you have nothing to hide, then give the parents a full set of documents you hold on Jonas, and do it today. Why does the BBC know more about what happened than the family?

The council have chosen an adversarial position in this, as evidenced by your post. If you had been honest and open to begin with, you wouldn't have the publicity that you have now. YOU are the ones who wouldn't even contact the parents, except to threaten them, they have not been supported by you as you allege. But don't worry, they are being inundated with offers of help from the top law firms, Doctors, Pathologists and thousands of people around the world. You left it too late.

You sent a social worker to the funeral and then phoned her during the funeral, disrupting the service. Give it up, you are not getting away with this, Do the right thing if you have done nothing wrong and give them the FULL file tomorrow. The adversarial approach isn't working for you, you have made a martyr of Jonas. All they want is the truth. Last chance?

Perhaps if the "overworked" staff hadn't taken so many children on spurious grounds, they wouldn't be "overworked"?.

Perhaps if you told Peter to scrap his targets, and his "tick-box" mentality you wouldn't have quadrupled the numbers of children in "Care" in the last decade?

Perhaps if social workers actually helped families instead of trying to prosecute them there would be far more time?

Perhaps if social workers did a bit of navel gazing instead of crystal ball gazing to predict "Future Risk of Emotional Abuse" then the public would support them and not vilify them when they make catastrophic mistakes?

The "Poor Me" mantra of social work is wearing very thin. The lie "we are damned if we do, damned if we don't" has never worked, you are damned when some of your colleagues harm children and you support them.

All social workers are being tarred with the same brush because you cover up for each other. I'm sure there were some "nice" prison guards at Auschwitz but the Nuremberg defense didn't work in Nuremberg. Get used to the new "open justice" regime by Munby, it's here to stay.

The title of this piece mentions Resignations...well let's see some, starting with the Interim Director.

If you don't believe their is something afoot here read this.... why did SCC use the "excuse" that Downs Children die prematurely? Crass, insensitive and above all untruthful....if they can issue lies like this there can be little doubt that there must be many more.

Ups and Downs Southwest
Statement issued in response to the articles in the Daily Mail and Daily Telegraph on Jan 19th 2014
Re the death of Jonas Stadden while in care

Ups and Downs Southwest is a charity supporting children and young people with DS and all those involved in their care and education. The organisation was founded on a mother’s desire to provide support and information to other parents from the point of diagnosis onwards. We now support hundreds of parents and families as well as providing information and guidance to professionals across the region.

We have been involved with Jonas and his family since his birth and have done our best to support his parents throughout the emotional turmoil and devastating events they have experienced over the last several months.

We are extremely concerned that the article in the Daily Telegraph refers to a ‘source’ from Somerset County Council saying that “But children with Down Syndrome do die prematurely”. We seek to immediately dispel the implication of this incredibly inappropriate and erroneous remark by setting the record straight for those less informed, and to reassure parents, that children with DS are not vulnerable to ‘dying for no apparent reason’ but like any other child, would only die prematurely if there was a clear medical issue and reason which could be identified. At the time of his death, Clinicians were unaware of any underlying medical issues or problems which would in any way account for his sudden death – and we wish to make that point absolutely clear.

We have been left deeply distressed by the untimely loss of this delightful little boy, and can’t even begin to imagine the pain experienced by his parents who adored him.

Don't expect for this to be another cover up in sick twisted somerset SS. soon there will be NO where for you to run & hide! KARMA IS A ****!!! Mother Justice!
