I sorry to say that due to the non treatment my 106 yr old Grandmother received in the Mary Stanley Hospital in 2008, which led to her death. I do not have the same support that I gave for many years prior to the League of Friends.
Gran was suffering with an ulcerated throat and mouth, she was unable to drink or swallow food, due to the discomfort. So after 3 days being monitored by her home help ladies the Dr made the hospital admission order.
That was @ 2pm, we waited another 3.5 hrs for a ambulance which didn't arrive, in frustration I got gran from a wheelchair into my vehicle and to the A&E @ Bridgwater, where the Ambulance Paramedics when we arrived, assisted in getting her onto a Gurney stretcher and up to the Ward.
Where the Consultant and Dr immediately saw her, the result an intravenous drip in the arm. Over the next 10 days, she grew weaker, unable to swallow at all.
Then the Dr, astounded me by despite talking of giving anti - biotics never did.
Put Gran onto the Liverpool Regime(Care they call it) I did not!!!!
So for the next 7 days she had all medication ,as it was stopped. This co called care, was a wetting of the lips with a sponge on a stick, and an air mattress..
Whilst sitting with my Gran as she lay weak, dying I asked a night Sister, re the antibiotics, and as to why despite the Dr saying they would prescribe never did. She said that she did nt need a Dr to give Anti - biotics, so put gran on them that night, after 3 days on the Easter Sunday Gran was sat up in bed eating albeit a little porridge for breakfast, the throat was getting better, but by now after almost 20 days with no food, she was so weak.............lat
er that day, gran ate a little Custard and Bananas, later for tea. I brought in a liquidised Sunday dinner, Blitzed so she could swallow, she ate 6-7 teaspoons.
Great, I thought.........her sister, the only one of 8 siblings had been to see her in the afternoon, who was herself 96, my Daughter from Southampton, with my Grandson, her Great Grandson, born in December 2007, she previously had not seen............So all in All a great day !!!!!!!!??????? Now, the final part to this real story, unbelievable as you my think ,but True!!!!!
This Sunny Spring Easter Sunday afternoon, the Hospital had opened the Window in my Grans single bedded room to allow the warm air to circulate through the rest of the main Ward, where approx 30-40 other patients were,
When I returned@ 9.40 pm that same evening to sit and spend the night at my Grans bedside, imagine my shock and horror to find the door to the small room shut, and when entering to find the room at sub-zero temperature, the window still open from the afternoon and Gran, Hilda Wilkins, lying 2 ft from this window, arms and upper body uncovered, literally frozen........When, I had closed the window that overlooked the River Parrett Pub, and cover the blanket over Gran. I went to seek assistance from the nurses, who were handing over to the night shift, told in no uncertain terms to go back and sit with my Granmother, that some one would come when the handover was completed, well @ 9.55pm a nurse appeared, obviously she had only just come on duty..........She observed how cold the room still was despite me having closed the window 15 Mins ago.
I enquired as to where the Dr was, only to be told " we do not know" I asked for clarification, only to be told there was only locum cover, and that the Dr was indeed not on site, but wait for this, out in a Paramedic car anywhere from Portishead in the North to Cullumpton on the Devon Border......Gobsmack
ed does not describe how I felt, so I asked if there was anyone down @ A & E Dept, to be told no they finish @ 9 pm, so I asked if they would check, all this time my Gran was in a state of shutdown due to the cold.......There was a young Dr still there@ 10pm, catching up on paperwork, he came, examined my Gran, warmed her Body with extra blankets and said he would report the occupancies that evening.
Had, I not gone back that evening, I know, they would have phoned me in the morning telling me she had passed away during the night.....Appauling!
!! State of affairs, especially to one of our Towns Oldest Residents....
The following morning on the Easter Tuesday, when the Dr and the Consultant returned from their Easter break, I insisted that Gran be mired to Musgrove Parkside, private, she was transferred later, much later that afternoon, were she settled in, had a little tea, and was sleeping at 6pm, when John my Brother and my Wife visited...........
She died 2 hours later, but not b4 I had to pay £3000.00 up front for her care there..........
When, I tried after the Funeral to get answers, to get the Coroner to investigate, Michael Rose the Coroner, said he would have to carry out a full postmortem , this I refused, saying that surely a camera into the mouth cavity and into the back of iPod the throat would provide the cause of her death.....
I refused him to cut my Gran open, just for this. I felt she should be spared this indignity at the end.........Hilda Wilkins ( Nee Fry ) 1901- 2008 RIP

In reply to you Three Pots Derek, it was the only Site available in the Whole of Bridgwater, where the land could be bought within the time neede to be able to Submit the Bid, to enable the Then PCT to bid to Government, for a new Hospital for Bridgwater.
It was at the time, now almost 5 years ago when the decision, had to be made, as one of the Three Ward Councillors then, it was a decision that could not be delayed, as the other possible Sites were deleted from the Equasion as unsuitable.
At the meeting to Vote for the New Hospitals progress, it was only us Conservatives who voted in favour, the Labour Bridgwater Councillors Voted against,???
We desperately needed to get this facility, for our Town, with the additional Day Appt Services that will mean, Out Patients will have treatment there instead of having to go to Taunton. The Mary Stanley Maternity Unit, will be more Modern and able to Deliver ( excuse the Pun ) better Midwife Care.
So, the end result is Gain, with reference to your comments that it is in your front Garden, for this there is no answer, the greater good, always must take precedence, Therefore, I'm sure that if you were to decide that you would want to sale and move, the property prices, I would think would remain buoyant , as Staff for this Hospital, Student Nurses, might wish to live within
Walking distance of the facility.........
There will be No Blue Light Sirens, on a. Daily basis, as it is not a A&E Unit, these are still Taunton, and Musgrove Park, however, it will be a small injuries walkin Clinic operating there.

I see now that the Newly Constructed Rounabouts are causing problems already!!!! More SCC Highways Cockups!!!
The one on Bath Rd itself, is having to have extra rainwater drainage Manholes Grates, as it has been unable to drain away the surface rainwater sufficiently, and the one at the Hospital Entrance is too tight, to allow the 40 Ton HGV traffic, that operates along the Bower Lane, Animal Transporters, mainly Sheep Hauliers, even the Tarmac HGV's when delivering the Tarmacadam for the Highways construction, Drove right over the Island s as they could not negotiate the roundabouts restraints..........

David L Preece.
Ps. Thankyou for your comment Re Hilda, my Gran, who by the way lived in Dunwear Villa at this end of Bower Lane and the Cross roads @ Westonzoyland Rd, until RM Smith, House builders, Talked my Grandfather into selling the Land, hence Wilkin's Rd is named, off Eastern Ave, and all the Fruit tree names of the Roads were our Orchards, I played in upto my 10 th Birthday, when the Farmhouse was bulldozed down, and the Bower Estate was built.........

Freddie, I stand by my posts, however what I did fail to say was the nursing Staff themselves were fantastic, during this very difficult and stressful time.
Whilst the Consultant and doctor enjoyed the Easter 4 Day Hols! the Staff were still there, as usual.
What I found was the locum cover was dreadful! the Dr having to cover from Portishead - South Bristol to the Somerset /Devon boarder @ Cullumpton, on night cover! that's the NHS for you and me............leavin
g no doctor's in the hospital @ Bridgwater after 9pm A&E closed.
