A TALENTED young photographer from Westonzoyland has been featured in a story-driven photo competition for people with disabilities.

Oliver Hellowell, 17, was photographed with his collection of wildlife and landscape photography for a competition led by Bristol law firm Irwin Mitchell and UK charity Contact a Family.

The online photo competition, ‘No Limits’, was launched in October and invited people to enter images which were empowering and could demonstrate that every disabled person has the right to live their life and work toward their goals, free from limitations.

Oliver has Down Syndrome and his mum, Wendy O’Carroll, who founded Westonzoyland-based Down Syndrome charity, Ups and Downs South-West, entered a photo of him with his photography collection, winning the under-18s ‘ambition’ category.

Jonathan Peacock, from Irwin Mitchell’s Bristol office, said: “The competition had an important message – that everyone, no matter what their disability, has the right to live their life and work towards their goals without limiting aspirations.”

Paul Soames, chief executive of Contact a Family, added: “Having a disability should not mean that you cannot realise your dreams.”

Oliver’s photography website – oliverhellowell.com – launched last December, followed by a Facebook page in the summer, which has attracted nearly 5,500 ‘likes’.
