FAMILIES in Puriton celebrated Christmas in Victorian style on Saturday December 21.

The evening started with a lantern procession from the town hall to the green outside the church where the giant community Christmas tree stands.

A barrel organ led the procession followed by the Brownies dressed in home-made Victorian bonnets.

At least 60 people took part in the procession with plenty more meeting up outside the church to hear the Salvation Army perform carols.

Victorian maids served mince pies, mulled wine and other Christmas food, with prizes handed out to the best dressed children and adults.

Jenny Morgan, who helped organise the event, said: “I think everybody would agree that it was a great success, being a new venture for the village.”

This is the first time Puriton has run this event and Jenny hopes it will hold the event again next year.

She said: “It was a huge undertaking for a village of this size. The food was so fantastic we ran out before the end.”
