THE head teacher of Holyrood Academy in Chard announced he was to stepping down from the role at the end of the year.

Maurice Hicks wrote to parents to tell them he had informed Holyrood's governing body of his decision.

“It has been a great a privilege to have been part of Holyrood over the past 13 years and to have worked with such a strong staff and so many talented young people,” he said.

“During this time Holyrood has gone from strength to strength and I have no doubt the academy has a very bright and exciting future.”

SCHOOLBOY Logan McKerrow, from Chard, won a top award for supporting animal welfare.

Logan, six, was named Young Person Volunteer at the Ceva Animal Welfare Awards for fundraising for Hearing Dogs for Deaf People.

Logan raised £28,000 for the charity after an Olympic torch he made at school was continually re-sold by buyers on eBay.

His mum Kerry said: “We never thought his torch would raise so much money for the charity and want to thank Ceva for making the whole thing even more special.

“We all had a great night at the awards and are really proud of him - the certificate has already taken pride of place at home.”
