A VITAL life-saving service has come to the rescue of a local student by helping her complete a volunteering challenge.
King Alfred school pupil Jayme Gower has completed her bronze Duke of Edinburgh Award and a major part of that was her six months’ volunteering stint with the lifeboat station at Burnham.
Year 11 pupil Jayme turned up at the station in all winds and weathers to help out with both training exercises and emergency calls.
During her time at the station, Jayme contributed towards many fundraising events and took part in routine training exercises on a regular basis. Jayme even managed to go out to sea on the lifeboats to witness practical crew training first hand.
Lifeboat training co-ordinator Lyndon Baker said: “Jayme has proved a real asset to the station in her time here and easily fitted in, becoming an integral part of the team.
“She has now started a further nine-month volunteering placement at the station with the commencement of the Duke of Edinburgh Silver Award.”
Burnham-on-Sea volunteer Lifeboat press officer Mike Lang said: “Training with the RNLI can be exciting, but a sense of commitment is essential. Jayme has worked hard and justly deserves her award.”
