WELLINGTON School's burly under-14s rugby team turned out in bright pink socks for their last game of the season.

In doing so, they raised over £500 for the charity Cancer Research UK.

The idea was the brainchild of year nine student Joel Gibson.

He said: “Cancer destroys lives, rugby brightens lives. My hope is that one might help battle the other.”

Nigel Renyard, the team's coach, added: “Many of the squad have been touched by cancer this year, with grandparents and some parents facing the disease.

“The boys wanted to make a difference and do something positive to try and help.”

The boys were sponsored to wear the socks and also received a commemorative photograph and programme.
