A HAYGROVE student has won first place in a creative writing competition.

Sam Hunt won the annual Brunner Creative Writing Competition with his short story, 'The Sentinel'.

Sam, who is in Year Ten, was presented with his prize at a Presentation Evening held at Richard Huish College in Taunton.

Grace Maddison and Mabel Mathews, who are also Year Ten students at Haygrove, were awarded 'Commended' for their short stories.

Sam follows hot on the heels of his sister, Olivia, who was the winner of this year's Radio 2, '500 Words' short story competition.

Richard Huish College invited students from schools in the area to submit entries for the competition that were inspired by the work of Arthur C. Clarke, British author, inventor and futurist, famous for his short stories such as among them 2001: A Space Odyssey.
