WATCHET took a step back in time on Saturday (November 30) to celebrate an ancient tradition.

Queen Caturn’s Night commemorates the visit of Queen Catherine, also known as Caturn, the wife of Charles II.

The celebrations included music, historical re-enactments and even Father Christmas was there.

Caturn’s chairman Ann Snelling said: “Caturn’s night got off to a good start as town crier Dave Milton led the parade alone Swain Street where all the Christmas trees had been turned on.

“The crowd sang and danced to the music of Don and Mark and Dave led the crowd in a rendition of the Queen Caturn Poem.”

Somerset’s High Sheriff Sylvana Chandler cut the official ribbon and free mulled cider, apple juice and Caturn’s cakes were served.

Mrs Snelling added: “Thank you to the Mad Apple Cider Company and Glenmore Cafe for donating the mulled cider and Caturn’s cakes.

“Thank you also to our sponsors Watchet Town Council, Art Life and The Community Bookshop.”
