Cannington woman awarded for 60 years of service to community
A CANNINGTON resident who has given more than 60 years of voluntary service to the village has been recognised with a special award.
Betty Edney was honoured as one of Somerset’s ‘unsung heroes’ after being nominated for a ‘Chairman’s Award for service to the community’.
She was also this year’s recipient of the Child of Cannington Award for Community Service, having given over 60 years of voluntary service.
Betty was a Sunday School teacher at the Congregational Chapel and has also served as vice chairman and secretary to the Parish Church. She is currently a member of the Parochial Church Council, has rung bells and is also a sidesman.
She served as chairman and treasurer of the Young Wives Club and was a member of the PTA Committee for many years.
The local WI is indebted to her for the many years she has been treasurer and also for the period when she was president.
Betty has also been clerk to the Trustees of the Henry Rogers Almshouses and is clerk to the Trustees of the Cannington Combined Charity.
She has played a part in the organisation of Cannington Christmas and has been a ‘poppy’ collector for 18 years.
