Give us the vote, under-18s tell Somerset Youth Parliament members

That’s one of the top issues in over 2,500 ballots returned to local members of the Youth Parliament, Ellen Collard and Eloise Chaplin.
Ellen and Eloise, both of Heathfield Community School, asked 11- to 18-year-olds what they thought colleagues in the Youth Parliament should debate and vote on in a sitting in the House of Commons next month.
Of the 1,253 ballots returned to each of them, the top topics were: that 16- and 17-year-olds should get the vote; better work experience opportunities; investment in jobs, apprenticeships and internships to combat youth unemployment; zero tolerance to bullying in schools; and that the national curriculum should be broader to prepare students for life.
Eloise said: “I feel delighted and relieved that I collected over 1,000 ballots in Taunton and West Somerset as lots of young people in my community were able to have their say and cast their vote.”
