Kind donation provides a winning experience for St John Ambulance in Minehead
9:00am Wednesday 30th October 2013 in News
ST JOHN Ambulance crews in Minehead will benefit from a unique driver training opportunity thanks to a kind donation.
Phil Martin, the area manager for community safety and risk reduction in Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service, won a Landrover experience day.
He donated the experience to St John Ambulance to have one of their drivers sent on the day's training.
Phil said: “Whilst the Landrover experience would have been great fun, the prize created a serious opportunity to assist a St John Ambulance driver to deliver their important medical services at a wide range of local events.”
St John co-ordinater Robin Cramp who used to provide the off road driver capability in the Landrover Ambulance recently passed away, meaning the capability is currently reduced.
Phil added: “I was fortunate to have known Robin for many years and gifting the experience has given me an opportunity to pay my respects to him in a very practical way.”
St John Ambulance provides first aid cover for many events around West Somerset each year.
Janice Malarkey is St John Ambulance's unit manager in Minehead.
She will be completing the driving course.
She said: “We are very grateful for Phil's kind gesture. Robin had great skills in off road driving that benefited a number of people over the many years he served with St John Ambulance.
“I hope that the skills I learn will give me the ability to deliver the level of support our four wheel drive capability has provided to the many events we attend over the course of a year.”
Minehead's St John Ambulance unit meets at the charity's North Road headquarters from 7pm until 9pm on Fridays.
