Haygrove students celebrate European Day of Languages
NINETEEN different languages were heard loud and clear as part of Haygrove School’s celebration of European Day of Languages.
Students, including those for whom English is an additional language, took part in a fast-paced ‘speed dating’ session that saw them teaching each other new phrases in different languages.
In PE lessons the warm-up instructions were delivered in Spanish, Drama students used only their bodies to communicate during a lesson focussing on body language, and ICT students created animations to celebrate diversity.
The school canteen had food from other cultures on the daily menu during the week running up to the big day.
Haygrove School is a centre for excellence in Modern Foreign Languages and this year the school introduced Mandarin into the curriculum, alongside French, German and Spanish.
European Day of Languages exists to celebrate the linguistic diversity of the 47 member states in the Council of Europe and champion the value of language learning.
