From the Caribbean to Burnham - BMX champ Liam Phillips is back for town's switch-on
AFTER a year jet-setting across the globe, Burnham's World BMX Champion Liam Phillips is coming home next month - to switch on the town's Christmas lights.
Liam, who was brought up in the Burnham and Highbridge area and attended Berrow Primary School and King Alfred School, thrilled his many fans by becoming World Champion in New Zealand in July.
It has been an incredible few years for Liam, who also represented Great Britain at the 2008 and 2012 Olympics.
He recently finished his World Cup season, finishing third overall following the final event, in Chula Vista, in San Diego, USA.
Then it was off to the Dutch Caribbean island of Curacao.
His father Paul told the Weekly News: “He spent the week on the island's only BMX track, for a training camp for the island's youngsters.
“It's something the Curacao government has organised for the past few years.
“Liam couldn't go last year but he was able to this time, and he had a very nice week.”
This week Liam has been back in the greyer climes of Manchester, his training base, and where the 2014 World Cup season begins in March.
Paul said Liam was looking forward to returning to Burnham for the lights switch-on on November 23, when he will be joined by BBC Radio Somerset presenter Emma Britton.
The day will feature plenty of free family entertainment outside the Victoria Hotel in Victoria Street.
There will be an outdoor Christmas market from 10am, and from 2pm, local choirs and community groups will perform festive music.
The switch-on itself will take place at 4.45pm.
A spokesman for the Burnham Chamber of Trade, which is organising the event, said: “We are delighted to have both Liam and Emma lined up to light up the town centre.”
