Cause of fire at Rooksbridge insect store still unclear
FIREFIGHTERS say the exact cause of a huge fire which destroyed a building full of insects in Rooksbridge remains a mystery.
Three fire crews from Burnham were joined by colleagues from Bridgwater, Cheddar, Wells, and Avon Fire and Rescue Service, after the fire broke out at the Rooksbridge base of Livefood UK, an internet-based company which sells live insects as reptile food nationwide.
Crews were sent to the scene, in Gills Lane, at around 3.25am on Thursday, following several 999 calls.
They worked through the night, at one point using a portable pump to get water from a nearby swimming pool to fight the flames.
According to the Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service: “100% of the building used as a live insect production unit and contents were destroyed by fire.”
A fire service spokesman said today: “The fire definitely started accidentally but because the damage was so severe, we may not establish the exact cause of the ignition.”
The Weekly News has been unable to contact anybody at Livefood UK this week.
A statement on the company's website said: “Unfortunately due to a serious fire we are temporarily unable to take any orders.”
