Unhappy Taunton family claim they were 'not told of school start date'
EDUCATION officials say they are doing everything possible to contact parents whose children are due to start school next year after a father complained he had not had any notification.
Andy Lawton, of Claremont Drive, Taunton, said that while some of his friends had received letters from County Hall, others had heard nothing.
Mr Lawton, whose daughter, Evie, was three in July, said: “The letters told parents what they have to do and when they have to apply by.
“When I found out other parents had been written to I phoned Somerset County Council admissions and they said not everyone gets the letter.
"They said we probably didn’t get it as Evie is so young but she’s entering school at the same time as everyone else next September.
“We were told we could apply for our preferred schools anyway but the deadline is January 15 and there must be some parents who are unaware of what to do and by when, so they could miss out on a place at their preferred school.”
A county spokesman said it was the parents’ responsibility to apply on time, although the authority makes every effort to remind them, with letters sent to the parents of all children on a central database at the beginning of September.
He added: “We become aware of the majority of children due to start school when they claim Early Years Funding.
“However, if a child is at the younger end of the academic year and doesn’t yet qualify for this funding or has only recently begun to claim for this, we may not necessarily have had their information at the time the bulk of the letters are sent out.
“Therefore additional letters are sent out regularly as children appear on our database.”
