Ex-England footballer teaches students at Chilton Trinity
AN EX-ENGLAND Under 18s footballer is now taking his skills to the classroom to help teach students how to be brilliant at maths.
Steven Orchard, 28, is a new maths teacher at the award-winning Chilton Trinity School.
He has played for England Under 18s, and as a professional with Torquay and Bridgwater Town for three years under Craig Laird, and now as a player with Bideford Town.
After doing coaching with children at football, he has taken up a passion to teach children how to be brilliant at maths.
He said: “It was the aim to be a professional footballer, but now I'm in education I am loving it. This is a fantastic school.
“I discovered that working with children in education was the way to help people and to put something back. I like problem solving in maths and I want students to work hard to really understand the subject.
“I try to do World Cup football links to learning in maths to help engage the students and link it in. I have even taught Pythagoras by using the footballer's Lionel Messi for example. This is World Cup year and if it helps children in their learning it has to help.”
