Five diamonds of the North Petherton community receive Alfred Jewel Awards
FIVE dedicated community servants in North Petherton were honoured at the annual Alfred Jewel Awards.
Lord Lieutenant of Somerset, Lady Gass, presented the awards on behalf of North Petherton Town Council during a civic service.
The five were: Heather Whittle, co-founder of Connect North Petherton, who also runs the monthly Cafe Connect; Angela Martin, a stalwart of North Newton Church; Linda Lowndes, organiser of the church produce show and monthly coffee mornings in North Newton; Warwick Fookes-Bake, treasurer of Moorland Parochial Church Council and secretary of Moorland Club; and Andrew Hinkley, church organist and choirmaster at St Mary's Church, North Petherton, for 50 years.
Heather’s citation described how Connect North Petherton, which she helped to found nine years ago, provides a service to everyone in the town who needs to be connected to local authority, police and welfare services, as well as links to solicitors and the town council.
The citation said: “In its first year Connect “signposted” some 740 individuals connecting them to services they needed but often did not know existed.”
Angela’s citation said: “Angela is a stalwart, albeit a quiet one, of North Newton. For many years she has quietly assisted with the work of the church through her kindness and compassion.”
It describes how she volunteers to help with events, makes cards, and helped refurbish the church hall.
Linda’s citation told how she has run a “very popular” monthly coffee morning in North Newton, and “works tirelessly” as the main organiser of the August church produce show.
According to his citation, Warwick has “thrown himself into local groups, supporting fundraising and helping on a practical level whenever needed.
“He is always willing to lend a hand and is always one of those left at the end to clear up.”
Andrew’s citation paid tribute to the amount of time he has given up playing the organ for the past 50 years.
It read: “He has brought joy to many wedding couples, to baptisms and his music has brought comfort to the bereaved.”
North Petherton Mayor, Bill Revans, said: "We are immensely proud of the recipients of the Alfred Jewel Award who give so much to our community. The Civic Service is a lovely occasion to celebrate and thank them for their contribution over many years."
