A KITE surfer suffered serious head injuries in a freak accident on Berrow beach yesterday.
Witnesses say the man in his 30s, from North Somerset, was picked up by a sudden strong wind and thrown high in the air before landing headfirst in the sand.
A Burnham Coastguard spokesman said the man had finished kite surfing and was walking back with his equipment when a gust of wind took hold of his kite and threw him 30ft into the air.
He landed head first and suffered nasty head and facial injuries.
An ambulance service spokesman said: "We had a call at 4.14pm. We attended with a rapid response vehicle, a full ambulance and an air ambulance.
"The patient went via air ambulance to Frenchay Hospital in Bristol.
"The patient had suffered significant head injuries."
