Crematorium to open near Bridgwater within weeks
FUNERAL directors in Sedgemoor say the opening of a crematorium between Bridgwater and Burnham will make a huge difference to bereaved families.
Work is nearing completion on the Sedgemoor Crematorium, off the A38 at Stretcholt, and it should open early in October.
Westerleigh, the company behind the project, says it spent years researching the best place to build.
Managing director Richard Evans said: “There was an obvious need for Sedgemoor to have a crematorium of its own to reduce the pressure on Taunton and Weston and to provide something more convenient for the towns of Bridgwater, Highbridge and Burnham and the surrounding areas.”
Richard Marsh, of Burnham Funeral Services, said: “I am delighted that the long-awaited Sedgemoor Crematorium is close to being open.
“We have supported the scheme since the beginning as we know what a difference it will make to bereaved families in the area.
“The new crematorium will offer longer service times, 45 minutes, and will be much less busy than other crematoria.”
Nigel Gillard of Bridgwater Funeral Services added: “It is clear already that the site is discreet and that the finished development will be an asset to Sedgemoor and will sit very well in a beautiful setting.
“It is a much-needed facility and will end the difficulties that many families face when travelling outwith our region to say farewell to loved ones.”
Westerleigh says local wood and stone has been used so the building and grounds will blend into the countryside.
Funerals can also be recorded, and screened online, for mourners unable to attend.
