VISITORS and entrants alike enjoyed this year’s successful Porlock Carnival, which raised more than £1,750 for charity.

The carnival procession, which made its way through the village led by town crier Tim Nixon and Porlock firefighters, featured decorated floats, fancy dress and carnival queen and princesses.

There was also a variety of entertainment, both on the street and in the village hall, from a jazz band to stilt walkers.

David Hancock, chairman of Porlock Carnival Committee, said: “The reaction from everyone was really good – it was a lot of fun and the weather was very kind to us.

“It has taken nine months to organise but was worth some sleepless nights in that time.”

The duck race, which was held in May, mostly finances the carnival, which itself raises money for a number of worthy causes.

Mr Hancock added: “We always hold a bit of money back in reserve but the rest goes to local organisations and charities.

“We help out as far as Minehead – including the Seahorse Centre, the RNLI and the Dorset and Somerset Air Ambulance.

“We would like to thank the many volunteers, supporters and committee members who made this a memorable experience in my first year of being chairman.

“I would also like to thank the police, fire service and St John’s Ambulance for their sterling work and contribution on the day.

“It is important for us all to support these traditional events – it would be a huge loss to our village if carnival was confined to the history books.”
