Up to 20 jobs go as The Exchange conference centre closes
THE conference centre, meeting rooms and cafe at The Exchange, in Bridgwater’s Express Park, have closed with the loss of around 20 jobs – after the company which ran them went into administration.
The Mercury has reported how Pro Serve Corporate went into administration late in August.
Although a deal was agreed which has seen catering firm Taylor Shaw take on the catering arm of Pro Serve’s business, which should ensure 260 caterers based mainly in schools around the South-West keep their jobs, no deal could be reached for the conference centre and cafe, which closed on Tuesday.
Ian Walker, administrator with Begbies Traynor, said: “There was nothing we could do for those parts of the business and unfortunately around 15 to 20 staff have been made redundant.”
Mr Walker said the recession was to blame.
He said: “It’s a timing thing - when the leases were first drawn up in 2007/8, they were at what now turn out to be unreasonable rates.”
The gym at The Exchange will be staying open, however, after another company, Evolve Pro Health, came forward to run it.
Mr Walker said: “There are six employees there who are being transferred. They are also now going through the process of trying to get the gym memberships transferred.”
