Malt 'n' Hops owners head to Crown and Sceptre - Castle Green Inn taken over
THE Malt ’n’ Hops pub in Taunton town centre has closed.
The County Gazette understands it was sold for £250,000 after owners Paul and Ellie Mcivor moved across town to take over the Crown and Sceptre.
Paul said Enterprise Inns sold the pub last month but the couple were now looking forward to revamping the Crown on Station Road.
Paul, 62, said: “Things will be changing around here. We’ve brought the whole team down here – the same menu, same staff and same chef.
“This can be a fantastic pub. It’s got the passing trade, it’s on top of the train station and it’s a good size.”
Work is currently underway to revamp the exterior while the inside is also getting a spruce up.
And Paul says he hopes to attract customers young and old as he battles to keep improving the pub’s fortunes.
He said: “In its heyday this was the place to be on Station Road and I think we can make it that once again.
“We’ve got a three-year rolling contract here and as long as we’re both standing in three years’ time we will be here for another three.”
Paul added that he was not sure what the Malt ’n’ Hops will become but stated his desire for it to stay as a traditional pub.
Meanwhile, the Castle Green Inn has again reopened after being acquired by Dorset Brewing Company (DBC).
Former owners Spirit Pub Company only opened the drinking hole in April after buying it from landlord Carlos Alfaro but the pub was closed again and was bought by DBC.
It opened its doors last Thursday and is in the process of being renamed The Beer Society, said sales and design director Michael Thornton.
There are also plans to tap into the ‘coffee craze’ and make one side of the pub a breakfast coffee bar.
