Councillor calls for M5 junction 25 improvements 'for good of Taunton'
TAUNTON’S motorway junction needs to be improved to cope with the town’s expansion, a councillor claims.
Cllr Mark Edwards, Taunton Deane Council’s deputy leader, says the J25 roundabout needs to be increased in size, with additional lanes, full signals and improved cycleways.
The proposals, likely to cost £10million, have been discussed over many years and Mr Edwards hopes to win Government cash for the project.
He added: “The motorway’s been a significant influence on the development of Taunton's economy.
“But the time has come for the required improvements to J25 and with the Government looking to invest in infrastructure to improve the economy, I can’t think of any single development that could have more impact on our town.
“We’re all aware of the stresses and constraints on J25, the A358 and surrounding roads, and the only answer is for it to be upgraded.
“This will deal with increased traffic and further increases that are inevitable as Taunton expands.
“There will be significant economic benefits to our town and the wider community if we get the required upgrades.
“I’ll be pursuing this to make sure Taunton's voice is heard.”
Mr Edwards said a new motorway junction at Walford Cross is now off the agenda, but plans have been mooted to convert the road at Creech Castle into a light-controlled roundabout.
