Fossils return to Ilminster - Part Three
5:30pm Saturday 31st August 2013 in News
THE fossils found in Strawberry Bank date back 183million years to the early Jurassic period.
While the dinosaurs walked on land, Ilminster was part of a warm, shallow coastal marine environment teaming with fish, ammonites and many marine reptiles.
Paleontologists suggest that crocodiles may have come here to give birth in the shallow waters where their young would be protected from larger predators, much as sea snakes and dolphins do together.
The evidence suggests this was the case in Strawberry Bank because of the large amount of juvenile marine fossils found in the deposits.
