Highbridge children make robots out of rubbish
12:19pm Saturday 24th August 2013 in News
CHILDREN in Highbridge turned rubbish into robots as part of a community scheme yesterday (August 23).
Youngsters aged between eight and 12 spent the morning litter picking in the town before taking part in an art workshop led by Somerset sculptor Fiona Campbell.
Avon and Somerset police have teamed up with Knowle West Media Centre in Bristol, the YMCA in Clevedon and Dreamscheme in Highbridge to run the scheme which is designed to help young people earn respect in their communities over the summer holidays.
Dreamscheme coordinator Trish Hart said: "The day went really well. The children were really engaged with the art project and I think it was a good experience for them in learning about working well together."
Local neighbourhood PCSO Susan Venn-Adams added: "The project was a good opportunity to build on our existing links with young people in the area and was a chance for the youngsters to gain new experiences as well as showing some of the positive work they do.
"People can tend to have negative perceptions of young people and feel they often cause nuisance but schemes like this encourage people to re-think how they see young people."
