UNUSUAL preparations have been made to add to the atmosphere of the West Somerset Railway ahead of the Autumn Steam Gala.

For the Cambrian Railways theme, stations along the heritage line are temporarily assuming the identities of some along the old Cambrian line between October 3 and 6, with Bishops Lydeard becoming Shrewsbury and Minehead Pwllheli.

The summit station of the line is Crowcombe Heathfield and in line with the theme it is being rechristened as Talerddig.

Entering into the spirit of things whole-heartedly are some lady volunteers among the station staff who have created some traditional Welsh costumes.

Eight steam locomotives and four of the ‘Manor’ class, which worked most of the prestige trains in midWales in the 1950s and 1960s, will be in action during the gala, alongside a narrow gauge locomotive Corris/Talyllyn Railway number 3 as a static exhibit.

There will be lots more to see and do at stations along the route including model railways, museums and workshop openings, as well as refreshments.
