Annual Shakespeare festival in Taunton success
8:00pm Friday 16th August 2013 in News
TAUNTON is looking to host an annual Shakespeare festival after the success of open air productions at Castle Green.
Ticket sales topped 500 for the GB Theatre Company’s total of four performances of The Merchant of Venice and A Midsummer Night’s Dream.
It was a first for Castle Green, which was recently converted from a car park into a public open space.
The only slight hiccup involved some people in Castle Green making a bit of unwanted noise, though most quietened down when asked.
Cllr Mark Edwards, deputy leader of Taunton Deane Council and chairman of the Taunton Events Group, was instrumental in bringing the festival to the town.
He said: “Obviously we have some lessons to learn from the event – it was the first of its kind – but the audiences really appreciated the chance to see a first class theatre company performing Shakespeare. The weather was kind to us as well.
“I hope we can make the Shakespeare festival an annual event, perhaps at another of Taunton’s magical open spaces.
“We’re fortunate to have venues which lend themselves to this sort of event.”
