EMERGENCY services were called to reports of a person hit by a train at Crosslands, Wellington, last night (August 12).

Maintenance staff who were working on the track found the body of a man, who is believed to be 56-years-old and from the local area, just before 8.45pm.

They reported the incident to The British Transport Police (BTP) who attended the scene along with officers from Avon & Somerset Police and medics from the South Western Ambulance Service.

A British Transport Police (BTP) spokesman said: “The body of a man was located with injuries consistent with having been hit by a train. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

“The man has yet to be formally identified but is believed to be aged 56 and from Wellington. It is unclear at this stage which train struck the man and at what time.

“His death is being treated as non-suspicious and a file is being prepared for the Coroner.

All services on the line were suspended while the incident was dealt with, causing disruption between Exeter St David’s and Taunton.

The railway line was reopened at 10.35pm.
