A REMARKABLE sniffer dog and his handler, who have risked their lives in Afghanistan, are coming to the much more tranquil and peaceful surroundings of Exmoor.

Sergeant Dave Heyhoe will share stories of his and Treo’s experiences of helping to save the lives of countless colleagues in one of the most dangerous places in the world at a Help for Heroes charity dinner in Porlock.

Sniffing out bombs in Afghanistan, Treo’s discovery of dozens of separate explosive devices, IEDs and arms caches made him invaluable to Army patrols and won him the Dickin Medal (the ‘Animal VC’) among other prestigious awards.

Miraculously, man and dog emerged from the conflict unhurt, and with a very special bond.

Sgt Heyhoe’s gripping account of the duo’s crucial life-saving role on the frontline is contained in his book It’s All About Treo, and guests at The Culbone will hear excerpts at the unique fundraiser at 7.30pm on September 15.

Managing director Mark Sanders said: “We have run a number of successful charity events in the past and this has proved very popular.

“We are particularly pleased to raise money for Help for Heroes and Veterans at Ease, and to host Treo and Dave. The Culbone team are very fond of dogs, and we have worked hard to ensure that The Culbone is dog friendly.”

Tickets cost £65 per person, including a three-course dinner, a charity auction and goody bags to take home, with all proceeds going towards Help for Heroes and Veterans at Ease, which provides aftercare and support for veterans, serving military personnel and families.

The brave pair will also be at Porlock Village Hall from 10.30am to 12pm on the same day, where Sgt Heyhoe will be signing copies of his inspirational book as part of the Porlock Arts Festival.
