A SPECTACULAR array of costumes and floats made this year’s Watchet Carnival one to remember.
Hundreds of people lined the streets on Sunday, despite the showers, to watch the colourful procession parade through the town.
Carnival Queen Sophie Elston was presented with the Jade Chatfield Memorial Trophy by David Chatfield to mark the start of her year.
A variety of activities kept young and old alike entertained for the whole afternoon, with circus acts, races, a falconry display and traditional fete games such as ‘hook a duck’.
Nigel Pike, one of the organisers, said: “It was really good. The most outstanding thing for us was that we had more first-time entries than we have ever had before, and especially from young people, which is very encouraging for the future.
“We are a relatively small carnival – it’s not about how big the floats are, it’s about people turning up, joining in and getting into the atmosphere, so it was great to see young people getting together and doing just that.”
