POLICE have closed down a drugs den in Crewkerne after persistent complaints from neighbours about drug dealing, loud music and other anti-social behaviour.

And police have said that the news should encourage others to come forward and speak out if they are worried that homes near them are being used for drug dealing.

Sgt Richard Barnett, of Crewkerne police, said: “Anyone who is affected by a property used for drugs or anti-social behaviour should contact their housing provider or landlord and police and work together with us to eradicate the problem.

“We will pro-actively target people involved in this behaviour to improve the quality of life for the wider community. People can call the police on 101 and ask for help.

“They should record times and dates of incidents, and car registration numbers, that can used to compile evidence.”

Officers took action – alongside South Somerset District Council and housing provider – after people living near a first floor flat in Crewkerne reported ongoing problems.

Several people told South Somerset Magistrates last week that they were left feeling terrified by activities going on at the property.

The court heard that known local drug-users were regularly seen visiting the address at all hours of the day and night, sometimes as many as 30 a day, and on one occasion two men were seen chasing another man armed with a knife out of the flat.

The court also heard that when police entered the property they found various types of drug paraphernalia inside including tin foil, syringes and chocolate egg cases, notoriously used as drugs containers.

Magistrates decided that the premises had been used in connection with the unlawful use of Class A drugs and granted an application for a closure order.

They ordered that the property must be boarded up for the maximum three-month period. It means that the flat will be closed to everyone, including the owner.

The court said it would be a criminal offence if anyone entered the property and offenders would be arrested.
