FIRE crews were called to tackle a chimney fire in Chard in the early hours of this morning (March 31).

Two teams were sent to the scene at around 2.36am at a property in High Street. Police confirmed it to be a chimney fire.

A fire service spokesman said : "A wooden beam within the chimney was found to be involved in the fire.

"Crews were at work from the hearth using small tools and one hose reel jet, attempting to gain access to the beam by removing the wood burner."

A request was made for an Aerial Platform from Yeovil to assist with gaining access to the roof.

A wooden beam was discovered to have been destroyed by fire.

Crews from Exeter-based USAR (Urban Search and Rescue) assisted with specialist equipment to shore up the chimney and make the area safe.
