Hinkley C expected to get the go-ahead today
BRIDGWATER is braced for a “momentous day” with the Government almost certain to give the all-clear for Hinkley C this afternoon.
Energy Secretary Ed Davey will make a statement in the House of Commons, probably between 12.30pm and 2pm, in which he is widely expected to give EDF Energy the go-ahead to build a third nuclear power station at Hinkley Point.
Gordon Bell, EDF Energy spokesman, said: “Today is a key milestone for EDF Energy's plans. We are confident that the project is needed for the UK and would unlock huge investment locally.”
Bridgwater MP Ian Liddell-Grainger said: “A 'yes' is vital. It will show that the work that's been done by Sedgemoor District Council, the town and everybody else has come to fruition.
“This is a momentous day for Bridgwater.”
There has also been increasing speculation that today could see a crucial announcement on the so-called 'strike price' - a guaranteed price EDF Energy will receive for the energy it produces at Hinkley C during its lifetime.
This is contentious because the rumoured figure, somewhere near £100 per megawatt hour, is far higher than the current market price.
EDF has been holding out for a sum which it feels reflects the long-term reliability of nuclear power and one which is high enough to attract investors.
Mr Liddell-Grainger does not believe Mr Davey will make an announcement on the strike price today, but believes it will come in a matter of weeks, rather than months.
He said: “The Treasury and EDF were still in negotiations over the weekend.
“The two sides are not as far apart as the media would have us believe but they're not quite there yet.
“There's some sensitivity because EDF want to get on with it but it's better to take an extra couple of weeks to get it right rather than have a problem in 35 years.”
This website will carry all the developments today as they happen.

If you had as much money as ILG wouldn't you move from Bridgy to West Somerset?
As most, are either University Graduates, in Law , Medicine, Physics or other Business Studies, which gives them the broad spectrum of Knowlege, which is a requisite to standing for Parliament. This however, does make them all, which ever Party a little aloof from the Electorate. Us the Business, and Working population.
But, Iain like every one is fallible, to making errors, especially when being interviewed, I myself, was interviewed on Tuesday by BBC Somerset Radio on Tuesday Pm, I'm sure within that 15 minutes, I mis said something.Re EDF
Hinkley C Government Go ahead to build.
No doubt, it will be brought to my attention, later this week. As I did'nt hear the piece broadcast by BBC Somerset, in Taunton.

Shame he was disinherited by Daddy, otherwise he'd be living in a jolly big castle in Scotland . . . if anyone's ever at a loss, Google ILG and Ayrton Castle, it's a huge wheeze, Daddy's menage a trois et al! Just as well Mrs ILG is loaded in her own right, let alone the money she creams in from the taxpayer for allegedly being his secretary/researcher

I wonder what you do for a profession or living, Envy, is one of the deadly sins.
Iain, runs his office @ Northgate, and his secretarial , research Staff, within the guidelines laid down by Parliament, how about naming all yes all the other 150 + MP who administer their Offices within and in their Constituencies. Do you want me to start naming the Labour, and Liberal MP who do similar....... And to what point, I've said before Iain, is no Tom King ( Lord) now. But his heart and Soul is for his Constituents, here in Sedgemoor and West Somerset. As an MP his work load in Westminster is fuller than many other Backbenchers, with the important Commitee's he s it's on.

The government will grant planning permission to EDF to build the power station.
The crucial part of the deal is how much our government is going to pay EDF to build it (strike price).
This has not yet been decided and until it has, there will be no new nuke reactors.
