AROUND 400 people – a mix of bargain hunters and nostalgia lovers - squeezed into the Bridgwater Sports and Social Club yesterday to snap up items following its closure earlier this month.

The club’s car park was full to bursting as people arrived from as far afield as Wiltshire, Cornwall and Herefordshire, to bid on the 500-plus lots, all of which were sold during the three-hour auction run by Tamlyns.

Auctioneer Ross Whitcombe said: “It was very successful. There was a large turnout as expected.

“We had a lot of people from different areas across the South-West, mainly from village halls, cricket clubs and catering firms.

“There were also a lot of local people looking for bits of memorabilia, for example the Sports and Social Club sign which was sold.”

The site is due to be taken over on Monday by EDF Energy, which will build an 850-worker campus for its Hinkley C workers, provided the nuclear power station goes ahead.

A planning decision on Hinkley C is expected to be made on Tuesday.

As a resident of Bridgwater, and a past worker @ British Cellophane, it does'nt make sense to me to knock down this Clubhouse, it with the Ballroom, could quite easily have been refurbished to be used by the EDF workers who are to be housed on the Site 1050 + 230 from BARFC Site over the Rd. For the next 10 years, during the construction build period, if the Go Ahead, is given for Hinkley C on Tuesday this week.
The Football pitches are to be relocated from their present location, so I would have thought there would be plenty of space to reuse it, as a Facility
