Pub given the go-ahead at Bridgwater Regional Rural Business Centre
PLANNERS have given the go-ahead for a pub on the outskirts of Bridgwater.
Marston’s Inns and Taverns is behind the pub/restaurant off the A38, at the Bridgwater Regional Rural Business Centre, in a joint scheme with developer Derek Mead, of Mead Realisations, and Junction 24 Ltd.
The scheme was given the go-ahead at this week’s meeting of Sedgemoor District Council’s development control committee.

I can not remember there being a rule of only one Pub on a stretch of road, if that was the case we would be closing 30- 40 in Bridgwater. There is however a rule that if you have the last Pub in a Village, it cannot be changed to residential use, it may close but must remain a possible Licensed Premises.

Blue Owl one of the best places to eat in North Petherton is actually hidden Clavelshay Barn its not directly on the A38 neither is the Globe. North Petherton still has the Lamb, Walnut Tree, Maypole isn't far away and neither is Boat and Anchor the other side. There is enough there within less than 3 or so I don't see why we need another one just about 5 seconds from the door.

In this case, Marstons are one of the countrys largest brewers, and will be selling their ales at half the price that the Compass Inn can, So the Compass will be forced to close. No competition at all.

The Compass inn is as far as I know, only a Managed House??. Part of a chain of Breweries, or suchlike.
Correct me if wrong but the Compass I thought was a local chain free pub which is what is needed. It has a menu which has something rather strange home cooked. Marstons is just another chain pub like so many in Bridgwater, heat up Microwave cheapo stuff tastes the same no matter which Pub in the Country you go to. Not everyone wants a ball pit in a pub and kids running around with a Brewster Bear. Its about keeping things local and variety. Time people stood up to these so called chain pubs, that put local home cooked food off the menu.

The Landlord, does not know what customer service is, if it jumped up and bit him on the Backside. I say this from experience, having been there previously, and enjoyed it. But the last time I went was 18 months ago, never again ,unless it changed hands, but that's me, so I go elsewhere that suits.
I know that if I was coming thro Pethy with my Two Grandchildren , aged 5 & 2 where they would be happy playing, in a modern Marston's Pub, so there it is Choice.
Those who want to frequent the Compassdo so, for me the food and ambience @ the Lamb in the Village is in my mind better.
With all the extra, trade with the EDF Development, to be announced tomorrow ( Expected Tuesday). Next they will be saying the proposed Hotel on the Opp Corner to Stockwell Village Housing, will take trade from the Compass Inn. If he was to pull his Pubs reputation up a few notches, he need not worry about lost potential business, it will come to him any way.

So with my family we choose places the exact opposite. The trouble with the child friendly place is the food is awful you just as well make friends with Mr Sanyo, Mr Toshiba as stick in a microwave pre-packed **** is not what older adults want.
The problem is more traditional pubs are being lost to this chain thing and that is sad, it seems to the outskirts of Towns that keep the tradition of a true pub going, which is why Bridgwater itself has so many cheap 2 for 1 meal type places for £10. North Petherton was a lot better before before all the extra houses, I remember the George Inn Pub as well grew up and use to hang out there as well and the Swan Inn yep it lost out to a Tesco as well as it wasn't used as a local pub. So much for healthy competition it couldn't pay for itself and had to close which is what is going to keep happening unless people like myself visit and keep old local Inn's running.
I use to be a waitress at the Compass and Maypole Inn when I was 14-16 all those years ago, for extra pocket money and know only too well the history of these places way before the likes of Brewsters were a twinkle in some far off planet. What a shame things move forwards sometimes!
The Lamb is fine but parking is not so fine on the main road which is another issue.

I had full Planning permission for change of use, and spent a large amount of money in buying Equipment etc, the advice from him was to pullout,
As the bank, had changed it criteria on lendings. It was to be a Project, that would have meant spending £240k for the Old Thompson's Building, with a further £150 K to refurbish it, to comply with Planning Regs.

A pub by the new Co Op would have been ideal and surely there would have been enough Patrons from Stockmoor and Wills Road areas.
Compass is an ok pub, nothing great but not bad either. I think it is probably owned by one of the big pub chains like Enterprise or Punch Taverns etc. Definitely not a freehouse.
I rate it more highly than the Boat and Anchor. That pub could be made so much more, brilliant canalside location but not enough goes into the ales or the food for my liking.
My pub of choice since it re-opened is The Fountain, always a choice of 4 well kept ales, constantly changing ale choice and friendly and considerate landlord and landlady. Shame about some of the clientel and I don't think they do food.

Don't use a thesaurus as that will only give you the synonyms and antonyms of words - you need to use your trusty old dictionary to find the meanings. Anyway, I've saved you the trouble:

As you will see, I was being complimentary - which I'm sure the high class cheese and pineapple chunks would have been on your bistro bar.

In any retail / personal Services industry, you must be able to compete and offer better than your competitors, so having, said that the Compass Inn Landlord, is part of chain of Breweries itself, so therefore is'nt a sole Independant Freehouse Landlord, as was first stated. Competition, is the key, and if you are not able to adapt, or adopt new working practices, then Get out of the Business, I'm sure the Brewery will find instantly some one to manage this well positioned Pub, J24 on A38 easy Motorway Access.

I think we should all turn up at the Fowls nest where undoubtedly we will be greeted with a funny handshake and an expertly cooked steak.
The opulent surroundings will be complimented by jovial and witty repartee and tales of long hot summers spent in an open top Jag whilst winding through the Greek countryside.
Personally I think having to look at the lifesize mural of Maggie, tastefully

On second thoughts, maybe i'll stick to

I think I'd rather sound like the rest of the sheep than sound like you, Blue Owl. Since you've asked for my opinion here it is. I would much prefer to visit a pub like the Compass than I would a Marstons clone. A little personality is good. I do not like pubs which look just like everyother one. I do not like 2 meals for a tenner. I do not like ball pits next to my table, shall I go on? Not everything in life revolves around money, somethings revolve around enjoyment.
take issue with me. I never told you you had to use Any specific pub.
As I said, if I had my Grandchildren with me aged 5 and 2, they would be happier in a child friendly theme pub.
Whereas when my wife and I go for a meal, then I would'nt choose one on that occasion a premises like that.
As there are very few good Steak Houses, within 10 miles of Bridgwater.
That can or do cook a T Bone or Rib eye steak as good as I do. So we tend to dine in, couple Bottles of Good Aged Red wine. No problem with Drink Driving, and I know the provenance of the Beef, and the Wine, no Horse meat in my House, not that I Hav'nt eaten it b4. Well hung, it's lean and Tasty.
Must Canter Orf Now, round the Paddock, Nay!!

Well sorry , I was brought up to stand for what you believe in and fight your corner, (metaphorically ) speaking.
I just love a good debate, me I'm up for it, but when the posts, turn to insults, well then I clearly have won the discussion.
Try looking at the content of what I post, and respond to that, not throw insults. As I treat them with the contempt they deserve. It's quite amusing to read some of the posts, better than watching the adverts in between the programme.

I learnt years ago, that you can achieve more by discussing differences of opinion, but, if your opponents start to err from the Topic, or to throw insults instead of reasoned argument.
Then they have lost !! But, of course, I am always wrong, as I am Independant, in thought, do not follow the sheep, have my own views, and am willing to defend them, you assume wrongly, that when I post, I am angry, and ready for a fight,! In fact, if you really knew me, I have the joy in playing Devils Advocate, so as to actually try to draw out from my critics their real thoughts.
So when, others Post, Who is this Fool, Blue Tit, Guinea Fowl, Barn Owl,
blue-Osterich, and the other Slurs and supposed put downs.
It Does'nt Work!
Just stay on subject, respond to the points made, and I will give imput, if I can add to the debate. perhaps a few of the Idiots who post Crap, can do the same........Tooo Much to Expect I Suppose, Well So Mote It Be !!!!
Now, my critics will respond, shall I sit in a Darkened room!! With a Good Bottle of Red.!!
