MEMBERS of the local branch of the Fire Brigades Union are demonstrating in Taunton town centre from 10am to 4pm tomorrow (March 16) against proposed cuts by the Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service.

They are angry at the suggested loss of several full-time firefighters at Taunton Fire Station, fearing it could lead to the service being overstretched.

Come on FBU, if you want the public's support at least get your members to look as though they have a bit of pride in their jobs. Jeans and tunics is so very '70s and does nothing to promote their professionalism.
The cuts are inevitable and reflect that there needs to be a review of how stations are crewed and the fire engines deployed, because believe it or nor, things have changed. Firefighters will always have my unswerving support, but fight this where it should be fought - new building schemes taking no account of the reduction of public services but being commissioned to get government grants, the reduction in road policing that leaves more nutters able to avoid prosecution and the fact that you are lions led by donkeys - at all levels from service to central government. But be prepared prove how professional you are, and this is not really a good start...
