Bloomin' marvellous idea - the return of a flower show in Chard
11:00am Wednesday 13th March 2013 in News
PLANS are underway for the re-introduction of a Chard Horticulture and Craft Show later this year at the Guildhall.
The Jubilee Group which was formed last year to help organise events to celebrate the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee in Chard has remained in place under the new name of the Chard Festival Group.
And one of its key aims this year is to reinstate a flower show into the Chard social calendar.
Group member Doreen Toms said: “We’ve called it the Chard Horticulture and Craft Show because it will be more than just flowers.”
Doreen has enlisted the support of various groups – Chard Gardening Club, Chard Allotments Association, Chard 2000/Chard in Bloom and Chard Carnival, along with the support of Frank Warriner of Combe St Nicholas Horticultural Show – to help with organising a show which will be held at the Guildhall in Chard on Saturday, July 13.
There will be eight sections – vegetables and fruit, flowers, flower arranging, homecraft, handicraft, art and literature, photography, and a children’s section with four age categories.
Doreen added: “Chard Carnival Committee has some cups from when they organised a similar event many years ago, but on inspection only two are in a good conditions with two others which may be used, so we will have to find more cups. A number of organisations have already said they will donate cups.”
The show is going to be open to all with no restrictions on where anyone lives, so entries from Chard, Ilminster, Crewkerne and villages are welcome.
Doreen, who will be acting as show secretary, said that another meeting will be held on Monday (March 18) at 6pm in the Mayor’s Parlour at the Guildhall.
“If anyone is interested in helping in any way please come along to the meeting,” she said.
