FIRE crews from across Somerset are currently dealing with a thatch roof blaze at Donyatt, near Ilminster.

The incident was first reported shortly before 1.30pm this afternoon (Sunday) and crews were still tackling the fire at 4.15pm. 

The initial call stated that there was smoke seen coming from the thatch and 8 fire engines, a water carrier, a foam carrier, an aerial platform, incident support unit and a command support unit were all sent to the incident.

Upon arrival, crews found around half of the 40m x 5m thatch was alight and action was taken to cut fire breaks in the thatch to contain the blaze.

The fire and emergency support service vehicle from the Red Cross was also in attendance to offer assistance to affected residents.

A building suveyor is currently on site to inspect the safety of the property.
