FOOD and money was given to an Alcombe-based charity in the nick of time thanks to an innovative event.

Fitness instructor Jenny Manvell organised a foodraising session at West Somerset Sports and Leisure Centre on Saturday in aid of West Somerset Food Cupboard.

People were encouraged to take non-perishable items or money for the charity, which they learned more about, and took part in activities.

Food Cupboard coordinator Chrissie Payne said: “It went exceptionally well. We are so grateful to Jenny for organising the event – as a result a huge amount of food and more than £100 was collected on the day.

“That afternoon we had a request for 20 food parcels and withoutthe donations from the leisure centre, we would not have been able to make up enough. This help came at the perfect time.

“This is a real community project – itis about West Somerset people helping West Somerset people. When we started in 2007 we did aboutfive food parcels a month – now we are doing 25 to 30 a week.”

The charity is run from St Michael the Archangel Church in Alcombe, where donations will be gratefully received.
