Drivers continue to flout parking ban on Taunton's Castle Green

Castle Green on Monday, February 18 Castle Green on Monday, February 18

SOME drivers are continuing to use Taunton’s £3million Castle Green to park on, despite the front-page story in last week's Gazette.

In last week’s paper we photographed dozens of motorists ignoring ‘No Parking’ signs on the prestigious town centre public space.

Taunton Deane Council has criticised the ‘selfish’ actions of the drivers and said it is taking action to implement formal powers to penalise motorists.

While the message is getting through to some, Gazette photographers have spotted several cars ignoring the rules again over the last seven days.

If people can park for free they will. The sooner something is done about it the better. At the end of the day there are no signs there so they will park. How long does it take to put some signs up.

Some drivers are getting the message? I don't think so, there were more cars than ever parked there today. The paving is being ruined by tyre marks, there is a sign stating delivery, pedestrians only but these selfish drivers don't care. They will go on until penalties are issued.

Whilst I don't condone illegal parking, as I see it these motorists are doing nothing wrong. The Council screwed up & only got itself to blame so no sympathy.

Chances are these people are not locals, or the majority of them are not.

People will be relying upon sat navs to get them from A to B.I was washing my car on Saturday and I saw so many cars go down my street because Priory Avenue was a one way system.

It would be very easy for TDC to simply place a road sign in the middle of the entrance to say NO PARKING or similar.

Prams and buggies would still be able to get past but cars would have to think twice. These people still probably think that it still is a car park.

The gazette's article certainly had an impact, there were twice the number of cars parked there today than previously! The sooner this is sorted out the better.

There us no signage to say dont park there, so unless you visit this site or read the local rag how would you know.

The council could try putting up temporary signs but knowing the public sector you need 13 meetings, 5 working lunches for the big wigs, ipads for all those in the meetings to have the notes electronically and save us (the tax payer) the £4.50 in printing costs. Then get quotes for the signs. The another meeting and working lunches for all that attend. Then its signed and the people on the ground will put up signs. This is 3 months down the line mind!

Unfortunately it seems the council never got the land use changed from a car park to community space.
Well done! That's even more money you are losing. If each of the cars parked there normally park in town all day, that's £5.50 lost per vehicle!

It's obvious the only solution is to install steel bollards to keep traffic away from the pedestrian areas!

They could still be "removable" if the whole area is needed for a specific event, but it's not "rocket science" to realise that some sort of control is required.

I'm amazed that no one actually thought of this in the first place!
