Motor-home parking plans rejected

“WE’D be opening the floodgates”, say councillors against a request by motor-home users for overnight stays in the town’s car parks.
A letter from the Motor and Caravanners Club asked Sedgemoor District Council to allow overnight parking by motor-home users in Pier Street car park, Burnham.
Club member Trevor Scantlebury wrote: “The car park has some excellent motor-home parking spots which, with adequate regulation, could be extended to allow overnight parking.
“This would be a boon during the summer months, allowing motor-home users to spend money without worrying of finding late night parking.”
But Councillor Louise Parkin has told the Weekly News: “As a council we shouldn’t be trying to compete with the excellent facilities we already have in the form of caravan parks in this area.
“Those businesses work hard to ensure they are offering a quality service and we shouldn’t be trying to cheapen the experience or take trade away from them.”
Cllr Peter Burridge-Clayton added car parks such as the one in Pier Street do not have adequate overnight facilities to accommodate motor-home users, such as showers, waste disposal and electric hook ups.
The Town Council has told Sedgemoor District Council it does not support the proposal.
