WILDLIFE rescue workers have helped free an overzealous starling who had got himself stuck inside a bird feeder.

Staff from Secret World were called out by bird lover, Amanda Hawkins, after she spotted ‘Stan the starling’ trapped in the device at her home in Chilton Trinity.

Amanda, a teaching assistant at Wembdon St Georges School, said: “At first I thought a bit of bin liner had got caught in the feeder but when I went to investigate I surprised to find it was actually a starling.”

She tried to free Stan with a pair of wire cutters but the wire mesh had become embedded in the bird’s wings. She called Secret World Wildlife Rescue and brought him in to its East Huntspill base, still trapped in the feeder.

An experienced member of the animal care team managed to free Stan, who is now recovering before being released.

Charity founder Pauline Kidner said: “This was definitely one of the more unusual of the many thousands of bird rescues we have been involved with over the years.”
