ATHLETES from King Alfred School in Highbridge have been crowned Sedgemoor area schools rugby champions.

The Year Eight team competed in an end to end battle with Haygrove School, from Bridgwater, coming out on top 29 - 19.

It was a group effort, but captain Dan Curry, Manu Vunipola and Anthony Taylor enjoyed particular praise for their performance.

The second match of the day saw King Alfred's Year Ten team take on Haygrove again.

Rugby coach Paul Shepherd said: “A cagey, nervous start from both sides soon erupted into a classic game in the red mud of North Petherton RFC.

“Once the players relaxed, the ball was handled well, with both teams showing their class in difficult conditions.”

Again, it was a team effort, but King Alfred's Chris Marsh, Ryan Dickson, Ben O'Halleran, Will Potter, Charlie Harding, Sam Thomas and Ryan Beard were praised for an exceptional game.
