Documentary highlights need for Halcon youth drop-in centre

A PAIR of young people are calling on council bosses to build a youth drop-in centre to one of Taunton’s poorest areas.

Jayden Neville-Moore and Jonathon Monger, both 21, have made a documentary to highlight the need for a drop-in centre in Halcon.

The duo are members of a youth movement called Fixers who aim to take action to make society better.

Jayden, who lives in Halcon, said: “The bad reputation of the estate annoys me because I don’t like to be labelled. I don’t like to be associated with people who can’t be bothered. I want to make something of my life.”

Jonathon said: “We’d like the whole perception of Halcon to be changed in the sense that people could look at it in the future and say this is a place where people are doing something to help their own lives.”

Taunton Deane Council communities chief Cllr Jane Warmington said: “I admire their energy and initiative in drawing attention to the needs of young people in their area – and doing something about it themselves rather than wait for someone to do it for them.

"Our community development team thinks this is a great idea, encouraged them to make the film and has been looking for suitable space for a drop-in.

"We’re looking at an application for funds to help get the idea off the ground.”
