Winds rip down trees over Quantocks

A MERCURY reader has sent in this photo showing some of the devastation caused by 60mph winds last week.
Roger Evans snapped the photo of fallen trees while walking on the Quantock Hills around Cockercombe.
He said: “There were, without exaggerating, hundreds of trees down. Every forestry track I passed was blocked – not one was passable for vehicles. “Many trees were snapped off half-way up. Most trees will bend with the wind, but when they eventually fall to high winds they fall from the base.
“When there is heavy snow on the pines, they become top-heavy and then with a high wind, the pines snap half way up under the weight.”
